Choosing Wakefulness
I often catnap on my couch on my days off from work, and today was no exception. After a short nap in which I had one of my recurring dreams I became aware that I was in a "transition" phase of sleep, where I was not yet awake, but was no longer truly sleeping. I realized I had a choice, to return to sleeping or to wake up. This phenomenon is not unusual for me, I know I've experienced it before.
Later on I started thinking about my awareness of the transition phase, and some of the things going on in society today. We're in a transition phase. For many years we've neglected the plight of people who enter our country illegally, we've been sleeping. Now we have a choice, to return to sleep and allow Congress to fill our brains with dreams about the dangers they present to our society, or to awaken, and realize they are not what we're being told they are. This is not the first time our society has been in a transition phase, the American Revolution, the Civil War, Prohibition, and Sufferage just to name a few were all periods when individuals had to make a choice to return to sleep and allow government to dictate the status quo, or to awaken, and take action.
This story about the immigration raids in Georgia bothers me. These people have not hurt anyone, in fact, the raids are doing more damage to their town than the presence of illegal immigrants has. Their only crime is entering our country to escape situations such as this. Are we going to start enforcing the letter of the law now? Are we going to send in troops to round up the 144,000 unmarried people cohabitating in North Carolina, where it's illegal? Floridians better be on alert as well, because it's illegal to have sex in any position other than the missionary position, engage in oral sex or kiss your wife's breasts. In a community in California it's illegal for anyone to stop a child from playfully jumping over puddles of water. Indiana prohibits bathing in the winter, Massachusetts residents need to pay a special license fee in order to wear a goatee in public, in Oklahoma women are forbidden from doing their own hair unless they've been licensed by the state, and men in Pennsylvania will not be allowed to purchase alcohol without written consent from his wife.
I've heard said a number of times if they want to come here they should do it legally, I wonder if they're talking about these immigrants working in New Orleans, or perhaps these forestry workers. It's time to make a choice, go back to sleep or wake up.
