On Acceptance....

before%20dawn.jpg

This print by artist Brian Andreas reads:

"I've always liked the time before dawn because there's no one around to remind me who I'm supposed to be. So it's easier to remember who I am."
I've been thinking about it a lot in the past few days since the allegations of homosexual behavior by Pastor Ted Haggard surfaced. How sad this man who has served so well cannot turn to his own community to find unconditional love and acceptance as a gay man. Indeed, he cannot even turn to himself for that acceptance, saying instead
"There is part of my life that is so repulsive and dark that I've been warring against it all of my adult life,"
How different are his words from the words of the Psalmist he has surely quoted many times
"Truly you have formed my inmost being; you knit me in my mothers womb. I give you thanks that I am fearfully, wonderfully made; wonderful are your works." Psalm 139:13 & 14
or the words of the prophet Jeremiah:
"Now the word of the Lord came to me saying 'Before I formed you in the womb I knew you" Jeremiah 1:5
My thoughts are with the Haggard family, I hope they can finally be who they are, instead of trying to be who others think they should be.

I was just writing a post about the same quote from Haggard's confession! Oh well, I'm going to post it anyway. It's a very disturbing -- and revealing -- line.
