In my world no DSL is a life threatening emergency....
Neighbor dogs barking and a non-functioning telephone at 10:00 pm are not a good combination for an over-active imagination.
Phone Company Tech Support: "Technical Support, how can I help you?"
Me: "My phone is not working."
PCTS: "What is your phone number?"
M: "999.999.9999"
PCTS: "And your name?"
M: "Anna Warmuth."
PCTS: "And would you like to confirm that we are your telephone service provider?"
(Silence)
M: I hope you are, I've got your bill sitting in front of me.
I think he was expecting me to provide a secret code or divulge a prearranged random fact about me, but apparently being able to identify their bill was confirmation enough that it was indeed my personal information displayed on his computer monitor.
PCTS: "We do have a service outage in your area, and we have a Tech working to get it fixed right now."
M: "So this is a known problem and I don't need to worry about boogie men running around my back yard?"
PCTS: "Yes. We are working to get it fixed as quickly as possible. No boogie men. Is there anything else I can help you with tonight?"
Next time I'll ask him to do something about the neighbor dogs too.
Note: I still fell asleep with the light on and my cell phone clutched in one hand, just in case he was wrong about the boogie men.
